I drive an 86 Trans Am with a 305 TPI. I have an electric fan that i turn on every time i go out and drive in town and on the highway. I put a board under the car for the air to hit and go up into the engine bay to help it stay cool but it only helps a little bit. Im good on coolant and the radiator is fine but i dont know what else to try any help would be very appreciated.:mad:

waterpump? I was overheating in my 99 and all it was was air in the radiator. Start it up and let it run with the coolant cap off and see if you get bubbles. then top it off and see. Also is your thermastate opening because that is probebly the most common problem right behind air bubbles.

The previous owner took the thermostat out to help it run cooler. Ive run it with the cap off and its full and you can see the coolant flowing through it, but no bubbles if i remember correctly. Its filled up as much as you can get it. I think Im gonig to cut a square out of the hood insulation where the hood vents are to help it.

Nevermind about the idea of cutting a square out of the hood insulation where the vents are. For whatever reason they decided to make the hood vents functional but not be able to direct air anywhere. Are they all a bunch of dumbasses over there or what. Almost the stupidest thing I've seen except for P.O.S rice burners with there coffee can exhaust out the back There is no way of getting air out of those vents unless i actually cut a piece of steel out of the hood braces. Forget that idea.

Do you have the plastic air dam that goes under the radiator?

I think I know what your talking about but if i can see a picture of it then i can definetly tell you if i have one on there or not. Is it like that plastic spoiler scoop looking thing that is under some cars to direct air up into the engine bay from underneath. If so than no i dont have one, thats why i put that board under there because its all i had.

Try replacing the air dam. Sorry I don't have a pic of it, but it sounds like you know what it is. They should be less than 50 bucks. Put a thermostat back in it, the coolant may not have enough time in the radiator to cool it.

I think I'm going to try that. I really don't know what else to try. Ill try the thermostat first cuz its the cheapest. As soon as I find an air dam Ill get it. I can only travel about 25 miles on the highway before the temp. gets too high.

Sounds like a possible blown head gasket into the cooling jackets. I had head replacement done on my 88 GTA 350 TPI, it gave same problems. Previous owner probably knew this is why he removed thermostat & sold it. Only one real solution for this, have a head gasket service done on both heads only or the other will go bad. Better hurry or permanent engine damage will result from overheating. Sorry to be bearer of bad news, but there it is.
If you want to just dump it, try gasket sealer, and sell, don't drive right away!
